This is a neat story with crappy beginning and a great ending. We had a gentleman come in with a mangled Raleigh Competition. Apparently it fell off of his roof rack and a Ford Explorer ran it over. He bought the bike new and really didn’t want any other bike since he loved the ride quality of his old Raleigh. It just so happened that I had virtually the same frame in the same color and same size at my warehouse! It’s not everyday you can walk into a bike shop and order up a 70′s Raleigh Competition.

I saved as many parts as I could from his old bike which wasn’t too many and then set out to built up his new frame. The old bike was a G.S. model with Campy G.S. parts and Weinmann brakes. Through this process I upgraded most parts to Campy Nuovo Record. Not only did he get his old bike back but it’s better than before. The customer was stoked to have his steed back and we were stoked that we could make it happen.

Back on May 4th we did a blog post showing me unwrapping my new old stock LOOK. Now it’s finished! Well, I still want to change the rear derailleur and seat post to C-Record so it will have a complete C-Record group but for the most part it is finished.

I have always really dug the paint scheme on these back in the day and I’ve been loosely trying to find one for years. Then all of a sudden I had found a guy in France that had a new frame for me, in my size! The hunt for C-Record began. This was a commemorative frame so I built it up to be basically the era of the frame.

Since these photos were taken I actually found a Flite saddle with the matching colors along with the correct jersey and water bottle for this setup. I’m a dork that way. Someday perhaps I’ll get some ride shots with the kit and all.

I started working at the shop with my 6 week old baby boy named Summit. It actually worked out really nice. When I first brought him in the shop I put baby car seat on the work bench and he did something to make his ol’ dad real proud. He looked up at the wall of bike tools and then laughed and smiled at them. Now, he’s only 6 weeks old and doesn’t really smile or laugh yet so this was a pretty cool thing. The boy made his old grease monkey dad proud with that. Now my plans are to have him building wheels by the time he’s 5 years old. No, seriously.

These pedals and seatpost were completely handmade for Gilbert Hatton for the ’84 Olympics. Gilbert Hatton was a racer from 1981-1992 and from what I have gathered these pedals and seatpost were made for him by his father Gilbert Hatton Senior.

When I saw these for sale at a bike swap I knew they were something special right away. They are very precisely machined yet still retain a handmade quality that is lost in mass produced parts. The pedals are almost completely made of titanium and the seatpost is aluminum. Judging from the width of the pedals and the lack of setback on the post you can tell these were made strictly for track racing.

If anyone out there has any more info or corrections please let us know.
